[front] ReinCONation September 6, 7, 8, 1991 A while back, I went to my first SF con. Following Victor Raymond around definitely gave me a skewed view of fandom, but I liked what I found. It wasn't long before I was hip deep in local fandom. I joined a local apa and discovered the joy of ego-scanning. I started working on the local convention and spread good times to thousands. I attended Corflu and discovered the breadth of fandom and the appeal of fanzines. Fans were exciting, different and new. "...This region is new; so new that it may be said to be still in its babyhood. By what it has accomplished while still teething, one may forecast what marvels it will do in the strength of its maturity... "So new is this region, that I, who am comparatively young, am yet older than it is. When I was born, St. Paul had a population of three persons, Minneapolis had just a third as many. The then population of Minneapolis died two years ago; and when he died he had seen himself undergo an increase, in forty years, of fifty-nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine persons. He had a frog's fertility." ReinCONation is new; so new That I cannot yet accurately forecast its future marvels. By the GoH's that it has attracted in its infancy (Bob Tucker and Geri Sullivan) one might speculate on the marvels it will achieve in the strength of its maturity. The future is its own, but for 1991 we're happy to present a great variety of fannish marvels for your enter- tainment and edification. We will not, however, display a frog's fertility when it comes to growth. We're hoping for three hundred or so people this first year, but, should the convention continue, we're committed to limiting membership to a manageable number. That will probably be around one thousand souls. We think seven to eight hundred members is just about right, and trust you will, too. "But I wander from my theme. St. Paul is a wonderful town. It is put together in solid blocks of honest brick and stone, and has the air of intending to stay. Its post office was established thirty- six years ago; and by and by, when the postmaster received a letter, he carried it to Washington, horseback, to inquire what was to done with it. Such is the legend." St. Paul is still here and Minneapolis is pretty wonderful itself now. Furthermore, mail delivery has improved somewhat since then. Drop us a line, send us your money, whatever...we'll respond Real Soon. (As opposed to the fannish Real Soon Now.) In future PR's I'll let you know exactly where the Famous Tucker Hotel is. (As soon as we figure it out. Hey, Sue Grandys has those bricks from the Leamington in her backyard (courtesy of Cummer&Peasley Deconstruction). Hmmm.) How much money? Well, glad you asked.
